To Your Health With Jourdin Hendershot:
Pet Health
|
This month I‘m switching things up a little. I will be talking about pet health.
As much as our health is important to us, so is the health of our fur babies. The majority of us treat our pets like they are royalty.
Some get homemade gourmet meals, are hand fed, allowed on the furniture and sometimes they even get better medical treatment than we do.
They let us know when it‘s time to play, time to eat, go outside and various other things. They pretty much live “The life of Riley!”
I know it can be difficult to stay on top of our own health let alone our pets but we all want our pets to live a long, healthy and happy life right beside us. Am I right?
You can accomplish this goal by using these simple tips that professionals want you to know:
|
- Double your vet visits – Your pet should visit the vet every six months, especially if they are a senior (Small breed: 9-10 years old and large breed: 7-8 years old). While at the vet also have their teeth checked for any dental problems.
- Spay and neuter – Although this cuts down on the homeless animal population, it does have substantial medical benefits such as lowering the risk of cancers and other diseases.
- Prevent parasites – Year round prevention of fleas and intestinal parasite control is very important as well has heartworm prevention.
- Feed them right – Maintaining a healthy weight is very important. Research has shown that obese animals life spans are reduced by up two years compared to animals at healthy weight.
- Enriched environment – Pets need mental stimulation! Whether it‘s toys, a walk around the block or a scratching post for your feline, play time keeps their muscles toned and boredom in check.
- Sooth achy muscles/bones – If you notice your animal is stiff after relaxing, check their bedding. If the bedding is becoming hard it‘s time for a new bed. *If you have a senior animal it might also help if you have them lay on a non-electric heating pad. Another great way to sooth achy muscles is by giving your pet a massage. All you need to do is briskly rub large muscle groups with the palm of your hand, then gently lift and squeeze the muscles. Wrap your fingers around each leg and squeeze gently. Just remember not to do any of these techniques too hard; this is just a soft/gentle massage.
There are many different types of pet health tips such as seasonal, nutritional, skin care and so on. What I have provided above are some general overall health tips to keep your fur baby in tip top shape.
Important side note: Many pet owners might not know this buy you can but pet insurance. No matter the size or breed there are coverage options out there for you.

- 1 Onion, finely diced

About 30 minutes before serving, open the biscuits and tear in half. Roll each torn biscuit piece in flour (to prevent them from sticking together), then drop into the slow cooker.

Here´s Your Answer
Questions From Our Members
A. Bassett of Fresno, California asks:
“My dentist says I have a cavity and that I need a filling. My tooth doesn't hurt so why should I listen to him? I think he may be trying to take advantage of me.”
Savon’s Answer
Most dentists will show you the x–rays and point out what they are seeing. A cavity is caused by bacteria eating away at the enamel of the tooth. Caught early enough, it can usually be fixed with a simple filling but if you ignore it, at some point it is going to start hurting.
Waiting often makes problem more difficult and more expensive to fix such as requiring a root canal and a crown. Trust the x–rays and the professional opinion of the doctor, it appears that he is really trying to save you some future pain and expense.

A Dental Composite That Grows Into An Implant May Be Coming
A direct reprint of an article by Melissa Busch of DrBicuspid.com
|
International researchers are attempting to create fake teeth that, with the help of biodegradable magnesium, will grow into a perfectly fitting dental implant, according to a press release from Wroclaw University of Science and Technology in Poland.
Researchers from Wroclaw and the National Taipei University of Technology in Taiwan are behind the research for tailor–made implant, which will have a solid ceramic crown, while the lower part will have a metal core with open porosity, allowing for it to be saturated with magnesium alloy.
The liquid metal makes the structure less fragile, allowing it to anchor into the jaw. Over time, the magnesium degrades, freeing up space for bone tissue to grow and further stabilizing and embedding the implant, according to the release.
|
“A composite implant with interpenetrating reinforcement and matrix phases is a new approach,” Anna Dmitruk, PhD, of Wroclaw, said in the release. “Until now, two different materials, ceramics and metal, were combined in implants, e.g., by means of a screw connection. Our project involves the creation of a composite, i.e., one material, but with a heterogeneous structure and very complex shapes. Filling such a lace structure with metal, as we propose in our project, would not be possible in any other way.”
Currently, two casting techniques are being tested.
Pressure infiltration, which precisely presses from the liquid state and the ceramic fitting is placed in the chamber of a press and poured with liquid metal. Then, the piston is lowered, and the liquid metal is pressed into the porosity of the preform, according to the release.
Precision casting, a technique that is used to make jewelry, creates a plaster mold from a ceramic preform. Then it is saturated with a selected alloy. During the firing of the mold, the preform is removed creating an empty space. The next step is to pour the metal to get the desired composite.
Additionally, the researchers will continue to conduct tests, including strength connection quality, on the implant prototypes.
Finally, the research and the creation of the prototype will continue for three years. After the prototype implant is created, the researchers will seek funding for the next stages, including conducting premedical research.
Until next time; brush, floss and keep smiling!
