To Your Health With Jourdin Hendershot:
Managing Your Weight
|
The majority of the people who have lost weight on a diet usually end up gaining the weight back within a few years if not sooner. The reason they gain the weight back is the strategies they use to lose weight are not the same as the strategies necessary keep weight off. Diets can help you lose weight but in order to keep the weight off, a life style change is needed.
The KEY to keeping weight off after a diet is by making everything a habit by:
Exercise - Do this everyday weather its stroll around your neighborhood, at home exercises, or even going to the gym. It doesn't matter what you do as long as you stick to it.
Count Calories – Studies have shown that strict calorie counting does not help in the long run.
- Women: Your meat portion should be the size of your palm.
- Men: Your meat portion should be the size of a credit card. Then double the meat portion with veggies, and the remainder of the plate with a whole–grain food.
Calories do count for both women and men but you don‘t have to be so strict.
|
Fiber – High fiber foods fill you up (veggies, fruit and whole grains). You should eat 4-5 cups of fiber rich foods a day.
Other helpful tips on managing your weight:
- Control your carb intake
- Portion Control
- Take Vitamins
- Don‘t forget your dairy
- Keeping a food diary
Staying Positive and motivated is an important part of weight management. Try to stay stress fee. Eat balanced meals. But MOST IMPORTANTLY don‘t become obsessed with your weight.

Here´s Your Answer
Questions From Our Members
A. Ludwitz of Las Vegas, NV. asks:
“I have had Savon Dental Plan for several years and I am due to renew. I have found a few plans that cost less to join than Savon. Can you explain why Savon is more expensive and what it offers that the other plans don‘t?”
Savon’s Answer
First of all, make sure you‘re comparing apples to apples. Savon is one of the most comprehensive plans on the market.
With the other dental plans, you may find a few procedures that are less expensive, however, the overall savings with Savon comes from our comprehensive Schedule of Benefits.
Every dentist that takes our plan is under contract to charge our members according to our Schedule of Benefits. We set the prices, not the doctor. This avoids the possibility of the dentist inflating the fees and allows the patient time to plan their budget as well as offering a clear definition as to what they are paying for.
Unlike the other dental plans, Savon allows the provider to charge for virtually every procedure. This means that the provider is bringing in a profit (even if it‘s a little one) on almost every Savon member that they treat. What this means to you is a greater longevity with the providers that accept Savon. Providers stay with Savon becase our fee schedule is fair and reasonable, for both our providers and our members.
In short, the provider can make money while the patient saves money!!!
Most dental plans list somewhere between 25 and 50 procedures. In most cases, their discounts are only for the procedures that are listed. If a procedure is not listed then you pay the provider‘s usual fee. Savon‘s Schedule of Benefits lists over 225 procedures.
With Savon, any procedure done by a general practitioner that is not listed on our Schedule of Benefits is still discounted by 50% off of the doctor‘s own usual and customary fee.
The only thing we offer that is not at least 50% off is specialty work, which is always done at a 25% discount at any of our preferred specialist offices.
If you’re considering changing to Dental Indemnity Insurance… Consider this!
Prior to the implementation of the Affordable Care Act, it was almost impossible for an individual to purchase individual Dental Indemnity Insurance. Now… almost every health insurance company offers it. In some cases they even tell you “it’s included in your health coverage.” Just remember, nothing is free!!
You are paying for that dental coverage and we promise you that you will be paying a lot more and getting a lot less coverage that you will get with Savon. We suggest that you visit our Comparison Center and do some homework.
A few minutes on your part will save you money up front on premiums and in the long run on your dental work.
These, of course, are just a few reasons why Savon is the best choice for alternative dental coverage. For more information on the different types of dental coverage as well as some pro‘s and con‘s, read Unraveling the Mystery of Dental Coverage.

Woman Arrested While Awaiting Dental Treatment
A direct reprint of an article by Melissa Busch of DrBicuspid.com

A woman was arrested for identity fraud and financial card theft while sitting in a dental chair waiting to receive expensive dental restorations at a practice in Chamblee, GA, according to a story published on March 8 on WSBTV.com.
Martina Pickett, of LaGrange, GA, was arrested at Fresh Dental in Chamblee for reportedly buying a stranger‘s name and CareCredit® information, a health and wellness credit card, online to pay for dental caps.
If convicted, she faces up to five years in prison plus fines, according to the story.
|
After she was handcuffed and taken away by police, Pickett admitted to buying the information. ‘I wanted to get my teeth did and they gave me a deal,” Pickett said in the story. “I paid $1,000 for it.”
Cybersecurity experts say it is very easy to steal others‘ credit information on the dark web.
Stolen credit profiles, which include full names, Social Security numbers, dates of birth, current and previous addresses, and credit card numbers are advertised for sale on social media, according to the story.
Until next time; brush, floss and keep smiling!
