Chlorine Poisoning

Spring has finally arrived for most of the country which, (except for those of us who live in the desert, where it’s already been in the high 90’s), means you are probably spending your free time outside.  You might be picking up your yards planting flowers and gardens, having picnics in the park, taking a daily stroll around the neighborhood or you may even be preparing the pool for opening!

In this article I want to address the subject of pools and the most widely used chemical in them.

This chemical is called chlorine and it is to rid the pool water of E. Coli, parasites and other bacteria.  Chlorine is necessary for safe swimming but if the pool is over-chlorinated it can cause serious risks such as chlorine poisoning.

Chlorine poisoning can occur by swallowing pool water, direct contact with the skin/eyes or by inhaling the fumes which can cause some of the following side effects within minutes of getting out of the water.
  • Nausea
  • Eye Irritation
  • Burning sensation in throat
  • Coughing and wheezing
  • Skin irritation
According to the New York Times health guide, if you or a loved one are experiencing any unusual symptoms after swimming, it’s recommended to seek medical attention right away.

If the chlorine is burning the eyes, flush the eyes with lots of water for at least 15 minutes.

If the chlorine was swallowed, immediately have the person drink water or milk (do not give milk if the person is vomiting).  Do not make the person vomit unless told so by poison control or a medical professional.

It’s very important to protect yourself when you go swimming, so here are a few tips you should consider before jumping in the pool:
  • Wear goggles
  • Wear a nose plug
  • Keep your mouth closed
  • Pay attention to the odor – strong smell of chlorine = too much chlorine
  • Shower immediately afterwards

Grandma's Kitchen With Grandma C.:

Simple Baked Cabbage Casserole

Grandma C.
  1. 2 lbs lean ground beef or ground turkey
  2. 1 yellow onion, coarsely chopped
  3. 1 tbsp minced garlic
  4. 2 bags shredded cabbage
  5. 3 cups beef broth
  6. 1 can tomato sauce
  7. 1 cup uncooked white rice
  8. 1 TBSP Worcestershire sauce
  9. 1 TBSP Italian seasoning
  10. Salt and Pepper

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.  **Spray a glass baking dish (approx. 13x9) with cooking spray.

Lightly saute the onions and garlic in a skillet with 1 tbsp olive or vegetable oil.  Add the meat and cook over medium heat until browned.  Drain if necessary -(lean meat will not produce a significant amount of grease).

In a mixing bowl, combine tomato sauce, Worcestershire sauce, Italian seasoning and uncooked rice.  Salt and Pepper to taste.  Stir to mix.

In the bottom of the glass baking dish, layer 1/2 of the cabbage, 1/2 of ground meat mixture and 1/2 of the sauce mixture.  Repeat this process.  Pour the beef broth over the casserole.

Cover and bake for approximately 1 hour. Let stand for 5 minutes before serving.

**Note:  If using a smaller baking dish, make 3 layers of the mixture and increase the baking time to 1 hour 20 minutes.

This meal is great when served with garlic toast!

Hike Safely

This is the most popular time of year for hiking.  There is nothing better on a nice cool morning than to take in the beauty of nature up close.  With the popularity of hiking also comes a major increase in hiking and mountain rescues.  Most of time, the need to be rescued is easily avoidable if you hike safely.

Here are few tips to make sure that you enjoy your hike and make it home safely.

1. Take More Than Enough Water:  This sounds like a no-brainer, but you would be surprised at how many people I see out on hikes with a 20oz bottle of water.  Believe me when I tell you that is not enough.  My hydration pack alone carries 2 liters of water and depending on the weather, terrain and distance, that is sometimes not enough.  It is recommended that you carry at LEAST 1 Liter per 5 miles of total hiking.

2. Dress Properly:  Day after day I see people hiking up a mountain in flop flops, basketball shorts and tank tops.  This is definitely not the proper or safe hiking attire.  Although pants and hiking boots are recommended, shorts and a good pair of shoes will usually suffice.

3. Stay On The Trails:  They are there for a reason.  Although it is very tempting to rough it and explore your own path, the chances of you getting hurt increase.  The trails are always the safest bet.

4. Watch For Wildlife:  Remember, you are in their territory.  You don’t like it when they come into your house and infringe upon your territory, so you should respect theirs.  You will most likely run into them during your hike and it's is best just to ignore them, respect their space and keep a safe distance.

5. Tell Someone Where You Are Going:  Too many times you hear on the news that someone is lost while hiking and no one knew where they were.  This causes a big problem for the rescue teams.  However, if someone knows what time you left, how far you were planning on going and when you expect to be back, it makes it easier to locate you if something happens.

6. Carry A Fully Charged Phone:  Unless you are out in the mountain wilderness, chances are good you will have cellphone service on your hike.  Make sure that your phone is fully charged so that you can call for help if you need to.  Make sure that the location service is turned on.  This will cut hours or even days off the time you are stranded.

7. Check the hiking reports:  Most cities provide a guide for hikers to follow, called a hiking report.  This report tells you what the best times to hike are, based on weather conditions and terrain conditions.  For example, here in Arizona where the heat is very excessive, often times you will hear the weather report include “on and off mountain times”.  They will recommend that you be off the mountains by a certain time to due to the temperature.

Hiking is fun!  It is one of my favorite things to do.  Never take it for granted.  Make sure that you prepare for it every time and get back home safely!

Memorial Day Facts:

Memorial Day facts to give the holiday some perspective

  • Memorial Day was a response to the unprecedented carnage of the Civil War, in which some 620,000 soldiers on both sides died.  The loss of life and its effect on communities throughout the country led to spontaneous commemorations of the dead.

  • The holiday was long known as Decoration Day for the practice of decorating graves with flowers, wreaths, and flags.  The name Memorial Day goes back to 1882, but the older name didn't disappear until after World War II.  Federal law declared "Memorial Day"ť the official name in 1967.-

  • The states of the former Confederacy were unenthusiastic about a holiday memorializing those who, in Gen. Logan's words, "united to suppress the late rebellion."  The South didn't adopt the May 30 Memorial Day until after World War I, by which time its purpose had been broadened to include those who died in all the country's wars.

  • In 1971, the Monday Holiday Law shifted Memorial Day from May 30 to the last Monday of the month.

  • On May 30, 1868, President Ulysses S. Grant presided over the first Memorial Day ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery—which, until 1864, was Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee's plantation.

  • "Here rests in honored glory an American soldier known but to God."  That is the inscription on the Tomb of the Unknowns, established at Arlington National Cemetery to inter the remains of the first Unknown Soldier, a World War I fighter, on Nov. 11, 1921.  Unknown soldiers from World War II and the Korean War subsequently were interred in the tomb on Memorial Day 1958.

  • On Memorial Day weekend in 1988, 2,500 motorcyclists rode into Washington, D.C. for the first Rolling Thunder rally to draw attention to Vietnam War soldiers still missing in action or prisoners of war.  The group, Rolling Thunder, takes its name from the B-52 carpet-bombing runs during the war in Vietnam.

  • It is customary on Memorial Day to fly the flag at half staff until noon, and then raise it to the top of the staff until sunset.

“My dentist office has an open floor plan (very low walls between operatories).  I noticed they don't have a lot of hand pieces (picks, explorers, mirrors, etc;).  They have a girl that takes the dirty ones out of the operatory and in just a few minutes comes back with the same tools (colored bands lead me to believe this) in a sterile bag.  How can I be sure that they are in fact sterile.”

Savon’s Answer

In the past I would have been very worried about that.  Most dental offices use an autoclave or chemiclave, the two leading methods of heat sterilization.  These methods can take as little as 30 minutes or up to 2 hours.

If your dental office can turn equipment around that fast, chances are the have a Statim.  This is one of the newer types of sterilization equipment.  Statim sterilizes handpieces and instruments for immediate use in as little as 8 minutes, reducing the number required as instruments can be processed ‘just in time’ or between patients.

You may want to ask your dental office what they use to sterilize their equipment.  As long as it's an autoclave (the newer ones can actually sterilize pretty fast) or a Statim, you have very little to worry about.
